'MORAY'S MAGIC

Following on from our successful 'Moray on the Map' art exhibition we have been running a poetry competition for primary schools in Moray. The theme of the work was the same, the young people were asked to write about what made Moray special to them.

We had over 500 poems submitted from  primary schools right across Moray. The children were divided into 3 age groups p1-3, p4-5 and p6-7. In each age group the judges chose a first, second and third place. They also chose an extra 15 poems for Special Mention, and all together these 24 poems have been published in a small booklet form.

This booklet is available for £1 at Elgin Library, Yeadons Bookshop and Waterstones bookshop in Elgin during the month of November. You can also purchase a booklet directly from us.

When I think about Knockando   

In a second I can hear

the big beautiful church bell ring.

 

In a second I can smell

the beautiful smell of whisky in the air.

 

In a second I can see

the lovely play park with the children playing joyfully in the sun.

 

In a second I can feel

the smooth stones that lie on the ground.

 

In a second I can taste

the beautiful taste of the wild cherries hanging on trees.

                                                                                        WILDLIFE  

                                                                   Prickly hedgehogs ambling along,

Birds whistling all day long.

Slowworms slithering, scaly and smooth,

Little bugs and beetles lurking in the undergrowth.

Owls hoot late at night,

Bats fly at twilight.

All this wildlife is special, it’s true,

Protect it for the future, for me and for you.

                                                            The Frozen Land 

 

 

You run out of the door,

Snow up to your knees.

The coldness of winter,

Nips at your nose.

 

Your fingers are numb,

Your gloves covered in snow.

Riding down the fields on your sledge,

How can it be such fun in the cold?

 

When you’re frozen on the spot,

Your legs shivering.

You’re a dragon breathing smoke.

But when you fall back,

The snow turns into a vampire,

Biting at your neck.
